Using Named Expressions to Name Markups

Named expressions are used to automate and customize the naming of markups. Once set up, you can select an expression from a list and the system automatically generates the correct base name for the markup as it is created. The Named Expressions dialog, which is used to create and define named expressions, opens when you select Utilities > Named Expressions from the Customize dialog Customize dialog (key in CUSTOMIZE DIALOG).

Named expressions can be used to automate and customize the naming of markups. Once set up, you can select an expression from a list and the system automatically generates the correct base name for the markup as it is created. You need to create a DGNLib file to store the named expressions for markups.

Named expressions reside in DGNLibs so they can be shared throughout files and among users. You can create a new DGNLib file to store the named expressions for markups or you can add named expressions to PageLayout.dgnlib, an already created DGNLib file. Three markup named expressions are delivered in …\\Workspace\System\dgnlib\PageLayout.dgnlib. You customize these example markup names in the Named Expressions dialog. The configuration variable MS_DGNLIBLIST, as set in the Configuration dialog (Settings > Configuration), shows the list of current DGNLib files.

A named expression has a set of keywords that identify usage contexts. The Markup keyword is used to construct a markup base name from the properties of the active file and active model. Named expressions and keywords have two names; an external name for display, and an internal name used to identify the expression clearly. To view all the named expressions associated with markups, in the Named Expressions dialog, choose Markups from the filter drop-down list.
